Unite's Constitution

As a society as part of Edge Hill University's Student Union, Unite is bound by a constitution which all members of the executive comity agree too. There are various ways to view the document. You can:

Edge Hill Unite Constitution

Clause 1. Name

The full name of the society shall be 'Edge Hill University Unite'

Clause 2.

Mission Statement:
As Unite, we are committed to having a reputation for bold evangelism and a loving community because we are passionate about Christ.

Aims:
The aim of Unite is to bear witness to Jesus Christ as Saviour, Lord and God in the University.
This shall be pursued consistently in line with the following objectives:
        a. Evangelism - To proclaim Jesus Christ as God Incarnate, Saviour and Lord, and to seek to lead others to a
            personal faith with Him.
        b. Spiritual Growth - To deepen and strengthen spiritual life through Bible teaching, study and prayer, so that the
            Holy Spirit may increase our likeness to Christ in character, behavior and effective witness.
        c. World Mission - To help Unite members understand God's commission to go into the world with the Gospel and
            encourage them to share this b y giving and praying.
        d. Commitment to Truth - To help students explore and assert Biblical truth, and to apply it to their academic
            studies and every issue of private and public life.

Clause 3. Membership
Membership of Unite is open to all

Clause 4. Beliefs:

Unite is a non-denominational society, and will strive to welcome all Christians of all denominations.
We believe in:
        a. The One true God who lives eternally in three persons - the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit
        b. The love, grace and sovereignty of God in creating, sustaining, ruling, redeeming and judging the world.
        c. The divine inspiration and supreme authority of the Old Testament and New Testament Scriptures, which are the
            written word of God - fully trustworthy for faith and conduct.
        d. The dignity of all people, made male and female in God's image to love, be holy and care for creation, yet
            corrupted by sin,
which incurs divine wrath and judgement.
        e. The incarnation of God's eternal Son, the Lord Jesus Christ - born of the Virgin Mary; truly divine and truly
            human, yet
without sin.
        f. The atoning sacrifice of Christ on the cross: dying in our place, paying the price of sin and defeating evil, so
            reconciling us
with God.
        g. The bodily resurrection of Christ, the first fruits of our resurrection; his ascension to the Father, and his reign and
            mediation
as the only Saviour of the world.
        h. The justification of sinners solely by grace of God through faith in Christ.
        i. The ministry of God the Holy Spirit, who lead us to repentance, unites us with Christ through new birth,
           empowers our
discipleship and enables our witness.
        j. The church, the body of Christ both local and universal, the priesthood of all believers - given life by the Spirit
           and endowed
with the spirit's gifts to worship God and proclaim the gospel, promoting justice and love.
        k. The personal and visible return of Jesus Christ to fulfill the purposes of God, who will raise all people to         
            judgement, bring
eternal life to the redeemed and eternal condemnation to the lost, and establish a new heaven
            and a new earth.

Clause 5. Leadership
a. The
Executive Committee shall be elected by the present Executive Committee and shall consist of a President, Secretary, Evangelism Rep, Prayer Rep and other offices shall be deemed necessary (based on membership of Unite). Where necessary, two or more offices may be combined.
b. The
Executive Committee shall hold office for a year (each year start in January) and shall be eligible for re-election if they will still be students for at least one year after assuming the role (except in extreme circumstances).
c. If a member of
Executive Committee is publicly acting in an inappropriate manner, or can no longer endorse Unite's Doctrinal Basis or aims, then a unanimous vote by the other members of the Executive Committee may cause this member to step down from their position.
d. For an Executive Committee meeting to be held, at least 4 members of the
Executive Committee should be in attendance.
e. All members of the
Executive Committee shall:
        i. Attend
Executive Committee meetings or send apologies to the president or secretary if they are unable to
           attend.
       ii. Be aware of Edge Hill Univeristy Student Union's Constitution, and how it affects Unite's policies and practices.
      iii. Be aware of Health and Safety practices and alert the President of any potential safety problems.
      iv. Make an effort to welcome new members and reply to emails from members in reasonable time.
       v. Notify other members of the
Executive Committee if for any reasons, such as time overseas or away from email,
           they envisage being out of contact for more than a week in term time or a month in Univeristy vacations.
      vi. Ensure the secretary has email and mobile contacts for every office holder, so that they may be contacted.

Clause 6. Finances
a. All access to Unite's funds shall require the signed approval of two members of the
Executive Committee, one being the Treasurer or Secretary.
b. The treasurer is also required to keep detailed record of all financial activities, and present a financial report at the AGM. (Records to be kept in a book held by the Treasurer and passed from one
Executive Committee to the next).

Clause 7. Relation to outside organisations
Unite shall be associated with the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF) and the surrounding churches that offer support to Unite. Representatives from UCCF shall be entitled to representation at Unite Executive Committee meetings. Representatives from local churches (known as Student Links) shall be kept informed of Unite's events and activities, and shall be entitles to representation at Unite meetings, events and the AGM.

Clause 8. Speakers
a. Only speakers whose religious beliefs are known to be in accordance with those stated in Clause 4 shall be allowed to speak at Unite meetings. This must be verified by at least 2 members of the Executive Committee.
b. New speakers, and speakers returning to speak after more than 1 year of having not spoken at Unite meeting or event, should attend at least one Unite meeting prior to speaking at a Unite meeting or event.

Clause 9. Amendments
a. This constitution may be amended with full agreement of the Executive Committee, with the full notification of the members of Unite.
b. The President of Edge Hill University's Students Union will be notified in the event of any changes. and shall be provided with a paper copy of the new, amended constitution.

Clause 10. Constitution
All members of Unite shall have access to paper and digital copies of this constitution upon request.

This constitution has been agreed and signed by all members of the current Executive Committee.
